Vol. 443 No. 8

Written Answers. - Family Law Cases Delays.

Helen Keogh

Question:

63 Ms Keogh asked the Minister for Justice if her attention has been drawn to the concern that exists about the length of time it takes to process matters concerning family law through the courts.

I am aware of and am very concerned by delays in the hearing of family law cases in some Circuit Court venues and I am committed to using the resouces available to me to reduce these delays.

In relation to delays in the Circuit Court generally, I would refer the Deputy to the reply to Questions Nos. 6 and 46 on 9 March 1994 — Official Report, vol. 440, col. 325 — by the Minister of State at my Department.

I could not undertake by way of a reply to a parliamentary question to make known any proposals I might have which require the consideration and approval of the Government.

In relation to the hearing of family law cases in the District, High and Supreme Courts, I am informed that there is no undue delay in the hearing of such cases.
