Vol. 443 No. 8

Written Answers. - Traffic Warden Scheme.

Ivor Callely

Question:

64 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the latest annual figures available regarding the traffic warden scheme; the cost of and income from the scheme; the proposals, if any, she has to extend the number of traffic wardens; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Details of the numbers of on-the-spot fines issued by traffic wardens may be found in the Garda Commissioner's annual report on crime — copies of which are in the Oireachtas Library. The 1993 report will be published shortly.

The cost of salaries in 1993 for traffic wardens employed by the Garda Commissioner in the Dublin metropolitan area was £1,470,000 approximately.

No separate figures for revenues received from on-the-spot fines issued by Traffic Wardens in Dublin are available. A national total of £3,991,551 in on-the-spot fines revenue was lodged to the Central Exchequer in 1993. The vast majority of these on-the-spot fines were issued by traffic wardens in Dublin.

In view of the substantial recruitment of traffic wardens in 1992-93, there are no plans for any further recruitment in the immediate future.
