Vol. 443 No. 9

Written Answers. - Moville (Donegal) Piers.

Patrick D. Harte

Question:

26 Mr. Harte asked the Minister for the Marine if he has received proposals from Donegal County Council on the need to repair and improve three piers at Moville, County Donegal; and if he will make money available to carry out these works.

Two of the piers to which the Deputy refers are situated at Moville while the third is situated at Carrickarory. The repair and maintenance of these piers is the responsibility of Donegal County Council who I understand have recently purchased the piers from the Derry Harbour Commissioners.

Donegal County Council in their submission in respect of the Department of the Marine's Fishery Harbour Development Plan 1994-99 identified Moville and Carrickarory as their third and fourth priorities respectively for development. The council has estimated the cost of repairing these piers to be in the region of £0.5 million.

The funding available to me for fishery harbour development projects in 1994 has been fully allocated. It is not possible therefore, to provide any funding for development works at Moville or Carrickarory this year. Consideration will be given to these piers in future years. However, given the level of funding that will be available over the next six years, only the most economically and strategically beneficial projects will be undertaken.
