Vol. 443 No. 9

Written Answers. - Refugee Status.

Alan Shatter

Question:

40 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice the number of persons who have sought refugee status and political asylum in Ireland in each of the past three years; the country of origin of each such person; the number of applications for asylum granted and refused respectively; the number of appeals lodged to date following the introduction of the new non-statutory appeals mechanism last autumn; the number of such appeals granted and refused respectively; and the number currently pending.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 77 of 14 June 1994 in which I gave details of applications for refugee status in each of the past three years. Since the introduction of the new procedures, appeals have been lodged in six cases, two of which were subsequently withdrawn. I understand that it is hoped to conclude an examination of the remaining cases shortly.
