Vol. 443 No. 9

Written Answers. - Irish Citizenship Applications.

Alan Shatter

Question:

41 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice the number of applicants in each of the past five years for Irish citizenship; the nationality of each such applicant; the number of applications granted in each of the past five years; the original nationality of the person in respect of whom such application was granted; the number of applications refused in each of the past five years; the nationality of each person whose application was refused; and the number of applications currently awaiting decision.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 76 of 14 June, 1994 which provided the information which is available in my Department in relation to naturalisation for the years 1989 to 1993.

I would also refer the Deputy to a letter from my office on 14 September, 1993 which provided the available statistics on citizenship applications up to 1992. In addition, in 1993 there were 3,994 foreign birth registrations and 863 post nuptial declarations.
