Vol. 443 No. 9

Written Answers. - Hopitalisation of Prisoner.

Tony Gregory

Question:

44 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice the reason parents of a person (details supplied) were not contacted when this person was hospitalised recently; and her Department's policy in such instances.

The offender in question attended the Medical Officer in the place of detention, Wheatfield on 3 June 1994 and was referred to the Outpatient's of James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown on the following day. The offender duly left prison at 11.30 a.m. on that day and returned at 4.55 p.m.

The hospital made a further appointment for him to attend a clinic on Friday, 10 June 1994. The offender attended this appointment directly from a Court appearance earlier on that morning.

The offender was not detained as an in-patient on either of his two hospital attendances and in the circumstances it was not considered necessary to contact his parents.
