Vol. 443 No. 9

Written Answers. - Medical Card Eligibility.

Gay Mitchell

Question:

69 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Health if he will direct the Eastern Health Board to issue a medical card to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 12 about whom Deputy Gay Mitchell has been making representations for some time and who has supplied all of the information necessary to certify his income, having gone to trouble to obtain a letter from the Revenue Commissioners.

A decision in relation to a person's eligibility for a medical card is a matter for the chief executive officer of the relevant health board. In the case of the person referred to by the Deputy, I have been informed by the Eastern Health Board that he is self-employed and applied for a medical card in April 1994 enclosing the relevant statement of income from the Revenue Commissioners. On the basis of the information supplied, the chief executive officer is satisfied that the person is eligible for a medical card. Accordingly, the person was requested by the board on 31 May 1994 to nominate a doctor of his choice who is participating in the general medical services scheme. The board will issue a medical card to the person concerned as soon as this information is received.
