Vol. 444 No. 2

Written Answers. - Illegal Drugs Seizures.

Hugh Byrne

Question:

23 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Justice the illegal drugs that have been seized in County Wexford in each of the years 1993 and 1994; the quantities seized in each year; her views on media reports that a wide variety of drugs are freely available in the county; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the main drug of abuse which has been seized in County Wexford in 1993 and 1994 is cannabis resin. Small quantities of heroin, cocaine, ecstacy and LSD have also been seized. Statistics in relation to these seizures are not yet available.

I am also informed that the Garda authorities consider that the availability of drugs of abuse is no more widespread in County Wexford than in any other county. Drugs seized at Rosslare port are usually for transmission to other parts of the country such as Dublin and in some cases for onward transmission through Northern Ireland to mainland Britain.
