Vol. 444 No. 5

Written Answers. - Remedial Teacher Appointment.

John Ellis

Question:

141 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Education if she will consider the appointment of a remedial teacher to service schools (details supplied) in County Leitrim.

I recently announced the appointment of 100 additional remedial teachers to primary schools, with effect from September next. This will bring to 1,133 the total number of remedial teachers in place in the primary sector. The posts were allocated on the basis of priority of need, following the collection and analysis of data from schools by my Department's primary inspectorate. Unfortunately, the schools mentioned by the Deputy were not successful on this occasion.

I will be keeping the question of further need in this area under review as part of a broader commitment to appoint a substantial number of additional teachers in the coming years. The needs of all schools, including the school mentioned by the Deputy, will be considered in this context.
