Vol. 444 No. 5

Written Answers. - Donegal Company's Financial Difficulties.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

107 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications if his attention has been drawn to the financial difficulties being experienced by a company (details supplied) in County Donegal at present and the service that has been provided by this company throughout Donegal and particularly North-West Donegal for many years; and the plans, if any, he has to meet representatives of the company to discuss their difficulties and provide a solution that will enable them to continue the service they have been giving for many years.

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

109 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications in view of the threatened collapse of the Lough Swilly Bus and Freight Company, County Donegal, and the loss of jobs and withdrawal of services from a large area of north and north west Donegal which would result, the steps, if any, he will take to ensure the future of the workforce and the continuity of services.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 107 and 109 together.

Apart from the operation of the appropriate licensing systems, I have no function in relation to any private road transport operator. I am satisfied that should the firm mentioned by the Deputy be obliged to cease operations, Bus Éireann in conjunction with other transport operators in the area will be in a position to provide alternative services.
