Vol. 444 No. 5

Written Answers. - Planning and Development of Irish Airports.

Martin Cullen

Question:

113 Mr. Cullen asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications in view of the Irish aviation policy published by his Department in February 1994, if Aer Rianta has any responsibility for deciding, planning and development policy in respect of international airports in Ireland; if decisions in respect of these matters are the sole responsibility of the Minister and the Government; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As outlined in my Department's recently published Irish Aviation Policy, the three State-owned airports, Dublin, Shannon and Cork, are managed by Aer Rianta on an agency basis on my behalf.

Ultimate responsibility for all matters related to the development and safety of the State-owned airports and for ensuring their efficient and cost-effective operation rests with me, on behalf of the Government. Aer Rianta, in their role as airport managers, are charged with ongoing day-to-day administration and operation of the airports and advise me on options for the future development of the three airports.
