Vol. 445 No. 6

Written Answers. - Departmental Advisers.

Mary Harney

Question:

212 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Justice the number of consultants, special advisers or programme managers retained by her Department since this Government took office; the nature of the work they have undertaken; and the cost of their services. [789/94]

My Department has a consultancy contract for the provision of advice, assistance and training in relation to contacts with the media and the Department's public image generally. The current cost of the services provided is £2,453.67 per month, inclusive of VAT. Also, a consultant was engaged recently to act as facilitator in the preparation of the Department's statement of strategy in connection with the ongoing strategic management initiative in the public service. The cost is estimated at £5,000.

There is one special adviser in my Department who advises the Minister of State on legislative and policy matters falling within his area of responsibility. In addition, he carries out any duties which may be assigned to him from time to time by the Minister of State as appropriate to his position. Since his appointment on 27 April, 1992 the total costs incurred in respect of recoupment of salary, superannuation contributions and travel and subsistence amounted to £97,000 approximately.

My Department has one post of programme manager which has been filled by two different officers over the period in question. The programme manager assists with the implementation of the Programme for Government in so far as my Department is concerned. In addition, he performs any other Departmental duties assigned to him from time to time. The cost involved to date amounts to £5,900 approximately in respect of salary, travel and subsistence. Since the programme managers appointed in my department have been established civil servants this figure includes the allowance element only of their remuneration.
