Written Answers. - Departmental Advisers.

Mary Harney

Question:

333 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of consultants, special advisers or programme managers retained by his Department since this Government took office; the nature of the work they have undertaken; and the cost of their services. [793/94]

Since this Government assumed office there has been a total of 16 consultancy firms, three special advisers and one programme manager employed by my Department.

The role of the programme manager is to assist the Minister in managing and co-ordinating the achievement of the Government's objectives in the Partnership Programme for Government. Programme managers also provide administrative back up to Ministers to assist in the achievement of these objectives and they meet regularly to review progress. The advisers have been employed to advise the Minister and Ministers of State on all aspects of departmental and Government policy. The total cost to date of employing a programme manager and three special advisers is £270,600.

The total cost to my Department to date in employing consultants is £278,000 and the nature of the work carried out is as follows:

—Evaluation of the Leader I programme

—Evaluation of Operational Programme for Rural Development

—Sale of the Cork and Dublin Milk Boards

—Appraisal of the Operational Programme for Agriculture, Rural Development and Forestry 1994-1999

—Development of Strategic Management Initiative

—Computer Consultancy

—Insurance Advice

—Assisting in the Preparation of a Strategic Plan for the development of the forestry sector to the year 2015
