Vol. 445 No. 6

Written Answers. - Cruelty to Animals.

Tony Gregory

Question:

393 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he will have arrangements made for the fines relating to cruelty to animals in the Wildlife Act to be brought into line with fines under the Protection of Animals Act. [402/94]

I am in the process of drafting legislation to amend many of the provisions of the Wildlife Act, 1976, including those sections which specify penalties for breaches of the legislation. The Wildlife Act is not, however, the appropriate legislation to deal specifically with the problem of cruelty to animals. This matter is more appropriate to my colleague, the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry.
