Vol. 445 No. 6

Written Answers. - Asthma Statistics.

Ivor Callely

Question:

405 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health if there has been any noticeable increase in asthma in young people, if so, the possible cause of this; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1133/94]

Eoin Ryan

Question:

418 Mr. E. Ryan asked the Minister for Health if he will give a breakdown of asthma sufferers in each health board area; if there is a significant difference in the figures between urban and rural areas; and the way in which the figure for Dublin's inner city compares to rural areas. [262/94]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 405 and 418 together.

The symptoms of asthma can range from mild to severe and, therefore, those suffering from this condition may be treated in a variety of settings from general practitioner care to hospitalisation. For this reason and since asthma is not a notifiable disease, the information sought by the Deputies is not available to my Department.
