Vol. 445 No. 6

Written Answers. - Suspected Fraud.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

65 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade if, in regard to his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 25 of 26 May 1993, he has received any final report from An Bord Tráchtála regarding alleged fraud in the company; the amount of money believed to have been involved; the steps, if any, that have been taken to recover this; the procedures that have been put in place to prevent a similar occurrence in the future; and if he will make a statement in the matter. [7/94]

The Fraud Squad's investigation into this matter is still in progress.

The sum involved was £128,000 and I can confirm that almost all of the funds have been recovered with the outstanding balance expected to follow in due course.

Meanwhile, I understand that, after detection of the irregularity, An Bord Tráchtála put in place a number of new procedures designed to prevent such an occurrence in the future; this was done following an examination carried out by a leading firm of accountants.
