Vol. 445 No. 7

Written Answers. - River Shannon Locks.

Michael Creed

Question:

178 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Finance if he will provide funding for the provision of hydraulic power-operated sluices and lock gates at Battle Bridge and Drumleague Locks on the River Shannon for the opening of the 1995 cruising season. [1119/94]

There are no proposals at present to provide hydraulic power operated sluices and lock-gates at Battlebridge and Drumleague Locks. With the opening of the new lock at Blackwater next year, it is proposed to increase the number of lock-keepers manning this area and to improve communication between the lock-keepers. It is felt that these improvements will cater adequately for the needs of people cruising in the Lough Allen Canal. The need to convert these locks to hydraulic operation will, however, be kept under review.
