Vol. 445 No. 7

Written Answers. - General Medical Service.

Desmond J. O'Malley

Question:

121 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Health if GPs working part-time, those who are in locum posts or who have completed self structured GP training will be entitled to work in the General Medical Service after 1 January, 1995; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [928/94]

As the Deputy is aware, the provisions of the EU Directive on specific training in general medical practice come into force on 1 January, 1995. After that date, registered medical practitioners, including practitioners who have completed self-structured general practice training, will continue to provide locum services under the General Medical Services scheme as well as services to medical card holders on a sessional basis.

Discussions are continuing between my Department, the Irish College of General Practitioners and the Medical Council on the specific application of the provisions of the Directive.
