Written Answers. - Special Education Review Committee Report.

Robert Molloy

Question:

144 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Health the action, if any, he is taking to implement the recommendations in the report on the Special Education Review Committee, 1993, that discussions should take place immediately between representatives of the Department of Education, the Department of Health and the Health Board in order to address the shortcomings which exist at present in assessment services; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [39/94]

The primary responsibility for the implementation of the recommendations of the report of the Special Education Review Committee rests with the Minister for Education.

I understand that the Department of Education are drawing up plans for the phased implementation of a number of the recommendations in the report. Officials from my Department have had preliminary discussions with Department of Education officials concerning the recommendations made in the report including those relating to assessment services for children with special needs.

My Department will be very pleased to co-operate with the Department of Education in implementing the recommendations of the report.
