Vol. 446 No. 2

Written Answers. - County Mayo Road.

Enda Kenny

Question:

61 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the fact that a meeting of Mayo County Council was held on 10 October, 1994 at which a unanimous motion was passed in respect of the condition of the road from the railway bridge at Saleen. Castlebar, County Mayo leading towards Aughadrinagh; if his attention has been further drawn to the fact that the compulsory purchase order in respect of this section of road was confirmed and sanctioned in July, 1987. [1735/94]

I refer to the reply to Questions Nos. 11, 16, 20, 21, 33, 36, 46 and 71 of 21 June 1994 which made it clear that the National Roads Authority is an independent statutory body which has been given overall responsibility under the Roads Act, 1993 for ensuring the provision of a safe and efficient network of national roads. In particular, the Authority now has sole responsibility for the allocation of grants for individual national road projects. I have no function in this matter, or in relation to the specific issues which arise in the administration and management of the work programme on national roads. Therefore, I am unable to provide specific information in relation to individual projects.

However, I have made arrangements with the National Roads Authority to ensure that Members of the Oireachtas can obtain information on national roads matters conveniently and expeditiously.
