Question:

165 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Justice the number of court appearances made by a person (details supplied) to date; the dates and venues of the hearings; the total cost incurred in the hearings to date; and the proposals, if any, she has to introduce amending legislation so that the number of such preliminary hearings is reduced and heard nearer to the defendant's place of detention. The number of court appearances made by the person in question is 17. The dates and venues are as set out below:—

The total cost of these appearances, including court costs, is estimated to be in the region of £4,900. This figure does not include normal Garda pay, but includes the cost of overtime, subsistence and transport expenses.
With regard to the question of changes to existing legislation, any legislative proposals I may bring forward to deal with the matter raised by the Deputy will be announced in the normal way in due course when they have been considered and approved by the Government.
