Vol. 446 No. 3

Written Answers. - Employment Incentive Scheme.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

189 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment, in respect of each January since their coming into effect, the number of persons engaged in the employment incentive scheme and the enterprise allowance scheme. [1960/94]

The employment incentive scheme has operated as a social scheme since the end of 1989 with the objective of encouraging employers to recruit persons who are long term unemployed, early school leavers and other categories of disadvantaged persons. Data in respect of the scheme since 1990 is set out in Table 1.

The enterprise scheme became operative in 1984 and throughput (i.e. numbers leaving) is available in respect of the period 1984 to 1987 when the scheme was operated directly by the Department. Responsibility for the scheme transferred to FÁS in 1988 and information is available for the period 1988 to 1994 on the numbers of participants on the scheme at the beginning of January. The data is set out in Table 2.
