The administration and promotion of the three State Airports, including Cork Airport, is a matter for Aer Rianta as part of their day-to-day management and operation of these Airports.
Cork Airport is a very successful operation with facilities which match those of similar airports internationally. In the last ten years traffic through Cork Airport has more than doubled from 334,000 in 1984 to almost 800,000 in 1994.
There has been major development of the terminal and associated facilities at a total cost of £17 million. A further £12 million investment in airport infrastructure is planned. Aer Rianta are also planning to develop a major business park at the airport. Cork Airport for its size has now got facilities second to none. I am determined to ensure that there is a return on this investment and that Cork Airport achieves its full potential. To his end I requested Aer Rianta to set up a marketing consultative committee for Cork Airport, representative of local airport, tourism and travel interests, for the purpose of reviewing the overall marketing and promotional strategy for Cork Airport.
