Vol. 446 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospital Waste Disposal.

Derek McDowell

Question:

269 Mr. D. McDowell asked the Minister for Health his views on the application recently made by Beaumont Hospital Board for planning permission for provision of a store for flammable goods and low level radioactive waste; the level of radiation concerned; and the nature of the safety measures in force. [2053/94]

Beaumont Hospital has had both a flammable goods store and a radioactive waste store on the site since the hospital opened. In order to enhance safety and security the hospital is proposing to build new and improved stores and has applied to Dublin Corporation for planning permission to do so. It is my view that it is right and proper that the hospital authorities, on advice from their fire advisers and the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland, should seek to maintain the highest standard of safety and security in these matters.

The level of radiation exposure to the public, external to the store, is within the level of what is defined as naturally occurring background radiation.

The safety measures in force are those laid down in the licence issued to Beaumont Hospital by the RPII, which is the relevent statutory authority.
