Vol. 446 No. 3

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

Liz McManus

Question:

287 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education if she will appoint a remedial teacher for schools (details supplied) in County Wicklow in view of the need for such services; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1839/94]

In the current year I have announced the appointment of an additional 100 remedial teachers to the primary sector. This brings the total number of such teachers now in place to 1,133. These appointments were made on the basis of priority of need following the collection of data from schools by my Department's Primary Inspectorate.

My Department has a record of a joint application for a shared remedial teacher from four of the schools referred to by the Deputy. However, if all the schools wish to submit to joint application it will be considered when I am next in a position to allocate additional remedial teachers.
