Vol. 446 No. 3

Written Answers. - UCD Créche.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

294 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Education, in view of the over-subscription to the créche in University College Dublin, the plans, if any, she has to improve the availability of child-care in universities for students; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that the Financial Committee of University College Dublin has decided not to proceed with the extension of the current créche; and whether she intends to take action on this matter. [1970/94]

The provision of créche and other child-care facilities within the universities in the first instance, is, a matter for the university authorities.

I understand from the Higher Education Authority that the Financial Committee of University College Dublin have now decided to set up a second créche. I also understand that all the universities either provide child care facilities or provide subsidies for students in relation to child-care costs in certain circumstances.
