Vol. 446 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Pat Gallagher

Question:

303 Mr. Gallagher (Laoighis-Offaly) asked the Minister for Education if she will make available a copy of any guidelines, rules or circulars issued by her Department in relation to the operation of school transport, with particular reference to those covering maximum loadings, passenger numbers and passenger safety. [2085/94]

My Department has issued no guidelines, rules or circulars in relation to the operation of school transport. The issues of maximum loading, passenger numbers and passenger safety are governed by legislation which is the responsibility of my colleague, the Minister for the Environment.

The legislation in question is the Road Traffic (Construction Equipment and use of Vehicles) Regulations 1963, as amended by the Road Traffic Regulations, 1967. Licences are issued by the Garda authorities who are responsible for ensuring that the law is fully and properly observed.
