Vol. 446 No. 3

Written Answers. - Resource Teacher Appointments.

Liz McManus

Question:

310 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Education if she will provide the services of a remedial teacher to a school (details supplied) in County Wicklow in view of the fact that, in line with her preference for the integration of pupils with special needs, the school has two Downes syndrome pupils and a profoundly deaf pupil on the roll and is in need of a remedial teacher. [2166/94]

The special needs described by the Deputy may be more appropriately dealt with through the support of a resource teacher. The role of the resource teachers is to act in support of ordinary teaching staff in dealing with children with disabilities in an integrated setting.

I hope to make a number of additional resource teacher appointments in the near future. The need of the school in question will be considered in this context.
