Vol. 446 No. 3

Written Answers. - European Convention Ratification.

Richard Bruton

Question:

47 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice when the 1983 European convention on the compensation of victimes of violent crimes will be signed and ratified. [1917/94]

The Council of Europe Convention on the Compensation of Victims of Violent Crime was opened for signature in 1983. The question of signature and ratification by Ireland of the Convention is being examined. Doubts have been raised as to whether certain terms of the Scheme of Compensation for Personal Injuries Criminally Inflicted comply with the terms of the Convention. Further consideration of this issue is needed and the matter will be pursued as quickly as is possible given the other urgent competing demands on my Department's resources.
