Vol. 446 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána Promotion Criteria.

Austin Deasy

Question:

80 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Justice if she will introduce a scheme of incentives such as automatic promotion for members of the Garda Síochána who perform heroic and/or herculean work in the course of preventing or detecting serious crime. [2047/94]

The criteria for promotion within the Garda Síochána is as outlined in the Garda Síochána (Promotions) Regulations 1987-93. There are no plans to change these regulations. Exceptional courage and heroism by members of the Garda Síochána in the course of preventing or detecting serious crime can be a factor in considering suitability for promotion. The Deputy may also be aware of the Scott medals, which are awarded by the Garda Commissioner to members of the force who, in his opinion, have shown exceptional courage and heroism involving risk to life in the execution of their duty.
