Vol. 446 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Crime Statistics.

Ivor Callely

Question:

156 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice if she has satisfied herself with the manner in which Garda crime statistics are collated; if consideration has been given to improving the system where statistical information could be more readily and easily available; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [1986/94]

I am satisfied that the existing procedures for collating Garda crime statistics are fundamentally sound. There may, of course, be room for improvement and, in this regard, senior officials of my Department meet regularly with representatives of the Garda and others to consider if further improvements can be made.

As regards the availability of Garda crime statistics, I refer the Deputy to the Garda Commissioner's Annual Report on Crime, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library. The report has been substantially improved in recent years to become more user-friendly. The report contains information on a vast range of crime statistics.
