Vol. 446 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Value of Gifts.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

13 Mr. Durkan asked the Taoiseach the nature of, and estimated value of gifts he or his wife received on his recent visits to Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. [2264/94]

It is well established international practice that on the occasion of official visits abroad gifts are exchanged between host and guest. In conformity with this long-standing practice, I presented gifts of Irish quality products to my hosts in the course of my recent official visits to Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and the United States and received reciprocal gifts in return.

Out of courtesy to the parties involved, I propose to adhere to the established practice followed by my predecessors of not disclosing details of such gifts. I assure the Deputy, however, that I have not received any gifts which breach the standing Government procedure instructions on this matter.
