Vol. 446 No. 4

Written Answers. - Motor Fuel Prices.

Richard Bruton

Question:

55 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment whether he has satisfied himself with the progress being made in closing the gap between tax exclusive motor fuel prices in Ireland and to the rest of the EU. [1883/94]

The price of petroleum products, including motor fuel, was decontrolled on 1 October 1991, leaving the determination of distributor and retailer margins to market forces. Consistent with this policy, I do not monitor such prices.

Finally, I should say that the Competition (Amendment) Bill at present before the Dáil provides for the public enforcement of competition rules. We are drawing up a list of priority areas for examination under the new competition legislation.
