Vol. 446 No. 4

Written Answers. - Social Employment Scheme Statistics.

Godfrey Timmins

Question:

93 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the number of people that have been employed in social employment schemes over the past five years; and the projected figure for 1994. [1771/94]

There were 9,893 participants on the social employment scheme at the end of 1989; 11,852 at the end of 1990; 12,344 at the end of 1991 and 15,558 at the end of 1992. The combined total at the end of 1993 on both the social employment scheme and the community employment development programme, which replaced the SES in the 12Programme for Economic and Social Progress areas, was 20,981. As the Deputy is aware, these programmes have now been replaced by community employment and I am confident that the target of 40,000 participants by year's end on that programme will be met.
