Vol. 446 No. 4

Written Answers. - Disabled Drivers' Parking Facilities.

Seán Barrett

Question:

136 Mr. Barrett asked the Minister for the Environment the arrangements, if any, he has made for the allocation of special parking stickers to those people who have specially adapted vehicles to transport handicapped persons; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2313/94]

Local traffic and parking bye-laws or temporary rules made by the Garda Commissioner under sections 89 and 90 of the Road Traffic Act, 1961, provide that parking permits for disabled drivers may be granted by a local authority to a person who is suffering from a permanent disability that prevents the person from walking or causes undue hardship to the person in walking. Any amendment of those provisions would be a matter for consideration by the Garda Commissioner.

Holders of disabled drivers permits are exempt from certain parking controls, in particular the requirement to pay on-street parking charges. In addition, certain local authorities exempt permit holders from the requirement to pay charges in local authority car parks.
