Vol. 446 No. 4

Written Answers. - Public Lighting

Máirín Quill

Question:

142 Miss Quill asked the Minister for the Environment the amount of money allocated to Cork Corporation for the upgrading and updating of public lighting in each of the years from 1983 to 1993. [2394/94]

Specific road grants are not generally made available to local authorities for public lighting. In the case of Cork Corporation, substantial State support for public lighting has been made available through the 100 per cent grants for improvement projects on national roads in the area and through a nationwide programme for the replacement of obsolete lanterns on these roads. In the case of non-national roads in Cork, the discretionary State grants to the corporation have been increased to £1.3 million in 1994, an increase of £0.39 million or 42 per cent on last year's figure. These grants can be used by the Corporation, at their discretion, to finance improved public lighting.
