Question:

141 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education the present pupil teacher ratio in primary school; the improvements which have taken place in the ratio in the past five years; and her forecast for the future. [2413/94]

The de facto pupil/teacher ratio in primary schools is approximately 23.4:1.

The following table illustrates the improvements in the pupil/teacher ratio in the last five years.

The Government is committed to reducing the pupil-teacher ratio at primary level to 22:1 by September 1996. Final figures for 1994-95 are not yet available but it is estimated that the figure will be 23.4.
