Vol. 446 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dublin Recycling Facilites.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

30 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for the Environment the action, if any, he intends to take to ensure that householders in Dublin can avail of citywide recycling facilities; and the recycling facilities currently available to serve Dublin householders. [2276/94]

Wexford): Some £945,000 has been paid to date from my Department's recycling grants scheme in support of 12 projects in Dublin and further payments will issue this year. The largest beneficiary under the scheme has been the Kerbside Dublin project which has received grants totalling £390,000 since its commencement in 1991. Kerbside Dublin provides a collection service for some 25,000 households and there are more than 100 collection sites in the Dublin area for recycling materials.

The strategy document "Recycling for Ireland" published in July 1994 proposes a major expansion or recycling activity throughout the country as well as in Dublin. The strategy identifies measures to be pursued by local authorities and the private sector, including an expansion of the existing national network of collection sites for recycling materials and improved local waste management plans.
