Vol. 446 No. 5

Written Answers. - Packaging Directive.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

49 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for the Environment if he will propose making the packaging directive more ambitious to help member states of the EU reach agreement on its terms. [2290/94]

Wexford): The proposed Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste is now the subject of conciliation proceedings between the Environment Council and the European Parliament. Ireland supports the common position on this proposal adopted by the Environment Council in March 1994 and the widely shared view that further significant changes by Council are unlikely to be helpful in having this important proposal finalised.
