Vol. 446 No. 5

Written Answers. - Housing of Traveller Families.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

95 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for the Environment his views on whether the provision of resources for housing of Traveller families is now a priority. [2420/94]

In the funding of serviced caravan parks, local authorities have been informed over the years that whatever additional resources may be needed in any year for the provision of such parks will be forthcoming. The original voted provisions were exceeded in each of the three years 1991 to 1993. The amount available for caravan parks in 1994 is £3.5 million. The provision of housing for traveller families — standard housing or group housing — is financed as part of the local authority housing construction programme, decided annually by the Government. Increased resources have been provided for this programme in the last two years.
