Vol. 446 No. 6

Written Answers. - Transport of Animals.

Tony Gregory

Question:

158 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the statistics, if any, available to his Department regarding the number of animals which are injured or die in transit between Ireland and north Africa the Middle East and their final destination on the European Continent. [2623/94]

Reports received by my Department indicate that of 166.574 cattle exported to countries outside the EU in the January to September 1994 period, 227 died or were put down during transport. This amounts to a casualty rate of just over one animal in a thousand.

Statistics regarding trade with EU countries are not available.
