161 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry his views on allegations (details supplied) that in the region of 100,000 greyhounds have been subjected to an untimely death in this State as a result of the systematic culling of racing dogs which have outlived their usefulness; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I have consulted Bord na gCon in relation to this question. The board would not accept the accuracy of the allegations referred to. It maintains that greyhounds are generally treated very well in Ireland. Many dogs which have finished their racing careers are maintained as pets by their owners or others. Many others form the nucleus of the breeding stock. A small proportion would be put down humanely.
The board added that it has worked closely with the dog wardens in connection with the tracing of owners of stray animals and will be glad to continue to be of assistance in this way or any other way which would improve animal welfare.
