Vol. 446 No. 6

Written Answers. - Essential Services.

Austin Deasy

Question:

14 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Defence if there are units within the armed forces specially trained to operate emergency services such as electricity supplies, fuel deliveries and public transport when there is a threat to these essential services. [2648/94]

Arrangements for the provision of essential services are a matter for the relevant Government Departments within their own areas of responsibility and those Departments seek the assistance of the Defence Forces from time to time.

The Department of Defence has no responsibility for the provision of essential services of the type mentioned by the Deputy. Accordingly, military personnel are not specifically trained or dedicated to operate such services.
