Question:

148 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Marine the total amount of fines imposed and collected in each of the last five years for illegal fishing; if he will give a breakdown of the foreign fishing vessels; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2546/94]

The total amount of fines collected for overall fisheries offences in the period 1989 to 1993, was £4.369 million. Included in that figure was £2.194 million in respect of illegal fishing. All but two of the vessels concerned were foreign registered. In addition a further 50 cases involving fisheries offences over the period in question remain sub judice.

The table beneath gives a breakdown of fines for illegal fishing, by year and nationality.
