86 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the steps, if any, he is taking to settle the industrial dispute over the failure to fill 55 promotional posts involving supervisory agricultural officers, in view of the importance of the work undertaken by these officers in meat plants; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department has had discussions with the Union concerned over recent months about the filling of posts in a number of areas of its activities. Recently, my Department has indicated that if the union lifted its threat of industrial action, it would be prepared to make a number of promotions. The union is currently considering these proposals and in the meantime has postponed industrial action.
