Vol. 446 No. 7

Written Answers. - Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Prisoners.

Enda Kenny

Question:

130 Mr. E. Kenny asked the Minister for Justice when Ireland will ratify the Convention on the Transfer of Prisoners; the position regarding the transfer of a prisoner (details supplied); and if she will make a statement on the matter. [2934/94]

Ireland is a party to the Council of Europe Convention on the Transfer for Sentenced Persons but has not, so far, ratified it. It will not be possible to consider the transfer of a prisoner from another jurisdiction to serve his or her sentence in this country until we ratify the convention.

I have directed that priority should be accorded to the drafting of the legislation which is necessary to enable this country to ratify the convention and I hope to be in a position to introduce this legislation in the Oireachtas in the near future.
