Vol. 447 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Abuse of Horses.

Richard Bruton

Question:

239 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the plans, if any, he has to introduce legislation to ensure that there can be no repeat of the abuse of horses which occurred in Dublin over Halloween. [3179/94]

The Protection of Animals Acts, 1911 and 1965, are already in place to deal with cruelty to all animals, including horses. These Acts provide penalties in the form of fines and imprisonment and are enforced by the Garda Síochána. The Deputy will wish to be aware that an order was made earlier this year which increased the fine for cruelty from £500 to £1,000.
