Vol. 447 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Cataract Operation.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

286 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Health when a person (details supplied) in Dublin 6 who is already eight months on the waiting list for a cataract operation at the Eye and Ear Hospital, Adelaide Road, Dublin, will have the required operation. [2981/94]

The scheduling of admission to hospital is a matter for the consultant concerned and each patient is assessed to determine their medical priority. Urgent cases are always given priority. Should the person in question feel that her condition has deteriorated she would be advised to return to her general practitioner who would be in the best position to emphasise the urgency of her case.

I should point out that I have allocated additional funding in the sum of £154,900 in 1994 to the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear to allow it to reduce waiting times for cataracts and other ophthalmology procedures. This increased activity should go a considerable way to reducing waiting times for all those currently listed for treatment.
