Vol. 447 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Alzheimer Disease.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

293 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, he has for the provision of residential and community care for people suffering from Alzheimer disease in the North-Eastern Health Board area. [3088/94]

The North-Eastern Health Board provides a range of community and residential services for people with Alzheimer disease and their carers. The community services include, public health nurse visits, occupational therapy, general practitioner care and day care facilities. Respite and long stay care for Alzheimer patients is provided in a number of board homes such as the John Sullivan Home in Cavan and the Boyne View Home, Drogheda. The board also liaise closely with the local branches of the Alzheimer Society.

Major developments in services for the elderly in the North-Eastern Health Board are currently underway and these will lead to an improvement in residential care and respite services for the elderly and mentally infirm. Additional assistance to carers is already provided for by the home care assistant service and the night sitting service which are offered where appropriate to support the elderly and mentally infirm in the community.
