Vol. 447 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Radioactive Waste.

Richard Bruton

Question:

316 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health if he has plans to provide centralised storage for radioactive waste from hospitals in order to prevent the need for storage on the site of hospitals in built-up urban areas as in the case of a hospital (details supplied) in Dublin. [3518/94]

The arrangements for the storage of radioactive waste arising from the administration of healthcare in hospitals are the responsibility of the individual hospital authorities. These responsibilities are discharged under licences issued to the relevant health agencies by the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland. The Institute ensures, through its licensing conditions and supervisory role, that the arrangements are satisfactory. My Department has no plans to provide for the centralised storage of such waste.
